Why I Love Jackson's Arts and Cultural Community

As a fairly new board member, I am a proud part of this organization designed to promote arts and culture in Jackson County.  Years ago, I helped support the birth of the organization.  What a cool concept!  Jackson has so much to offer and so much to do.

Board Member Jon Hart

I have been an ACAJC board member for about a year and a half.  I got involved with the board because I have been interested in promoting arts in Jackson as a way of building self expression and a voice.

Hard to believe that August will be here this weekend.  Summer seems to be slipping by before I even had a chance to get bored with it.

On July 30 we have an exciting event coming to Jackson, the Blue Lake Youth Symphony Orchestra will be performing at JCC Potter Center to benefit the Jackson School of the Arts.

As a mother of a nine year old daughter my summer months are filled with summer play dates, pool parties, bike rides, and countless hours on the lake.  But no matter how busy we are I still hear the two phrases every parent dreads, "I am bored" or "there is nothing to do."

But there is one thing that has caught her attention thanks to a friend and that is the Be Creative @ Your Library Summer Reading Program.

The incentive sheets to read books that she would not normally read to the progress check off sheet...there are activities that

Gloomy might be the right word to describe the weather here today - it is a sharp contrast to that of Monday.  This quick change tends to affect my mood - makes me question, wonder if that beautiful day did exist, did I imagine it?  I long to pull the covers up tight to my chin and just wait for another sunny day to arrive to help me shake off this hollow feeling.

Summer is officially here - time to get outside!  There are so many events happening around town that it should not be a problem finding something to please everyone in your family.

From attending the Blues Festival, Civil War Muster, Audubon Exhibit, the reopened Armory Arts Grand Gallery, hearing one of the local bands at a bar/restaurant or taking one of the many art classes that will be offered.  Everyday you can find an art happening going on.

The question is no longer what is there to do in Jackson but how can I decide what to do

I have to be honest I have typed, deleted, typed and deleted about seven different messages into this space - none of which seem to capture the essence of the constant dialogue that is running through my brain.

I am sure all of you have read the articles or have seen the public art that has sprung up around town - like spring flowers bursting through the soil so has art!

The Alliance has been the face behind making this happen but it truly was a group effort, one of which I am very proud of.  The Alliance in partnership with the City of

This week marks one year for me as the Director of the Arts and Cultural Alliance - it doesn't seem possible.  I truly believe we have made great strides in promoting and supporting the arts in Jackson but I know there are so many other opportunities that still lie ahead, and I'm looking forward to!

I also feel as if I've been on the edge of my seat all week in anticipation of the arrival of Mark Lakeman from the City Repair Project.  He will be in Jackson Thursday to give a presentation about the work they are doing and on Friday will be working with the residen

Tuesday a young gal come into my office to find out about the Alliance.  After chatting for a bit about us and the work that she does I finally asked, "As a young woman just out of college why did you pick Jackson to move to?"  Her response, "Because there is so much to do here!"

Really?  So much to do here?  Jackson?

Actually I would have to agree.  We have so many hidden gems and variety within our county it is unbelievable.  Which makes me wonder if we take for granted what is in our own backyard.  When was the
