Why I Love Jackson's Arts and Cultural Community

As a fairly new board member, I am a proud part of this organization designed to promote arts and culture in Jackson County.  Years ago, I helped support the birth of the organization.  What a cool concept!  Jackson has so much to offer and so much to do.

What I think it critically important is how relevant arts and culture is to everyone's lives.  It enriches who we are as a people.  It improves economic development.  It draws people together.  It lifts the soul and inspires.  And that is what makes me want to reach out to others to say, "See what we have to offer!  I am proud!"

As we as board members continue to strive to support the arts community and help people understand its instrinsic value, we hope you will offer your input.  We welcome your thoughts and ideas.  Creativity is what we are all about.  Take a look at the the Community Arts and Cultural Plan!

Please take the time to meet our new Director, Bob Duha.  There is lot to offer, lots to accomplish, and that we can do together - well.

Best Regards,

Shelly Hendrick

Board Member Jon Hart

I have been an ACAJC board member for about a year and a half.  I got involved with the board because I have been interested in promoting arts in Jackson as a way of building self expression and a voice.

I was the owner of the Thunderbird Coffeehouse where I hung local art and hosted weekly concerts featuring local and area bands.  Many artists, writers, and musicians hung out there and I offered a variety of opportunities for a variety of artists to play out or read poetry or have a wall to hang their new piece on.  Many new bands formed due to the coffeehouse's role as a venue and a welcoming home to free speech.

Since the days of the coffeehouse's closing, I have continued to host music at all kinds of different venues including Mat's Cafe, St. John's United Church of Christ, Cascades Elementary School, the Unitarian Universalist Church of East Liberty, and the Michigan Theatre.  I do these shows because I am committed to bringing artistic opportunity to Jackson.  If we don't do it, who will?

My current endeavor is a comic strip called The Burgh.  It details the history of Jackson with some ironic twists.  I write the strip and my brother Joe does the art.  We've been doing it for almost a year and a half.

If you're not doing art, I encourage you to try.  If you just can't do it yourself, then I urge you to become a supporter and give your time, talents, and money to organizations and venues that support local art.

Regards,

Jon

Hard to believe that August will be here this weekend.  Summer seems to be slipping by before I even had a chance to get bored with it.

Before I know it a new year will be upon us, which means it's time to start setting directives for next year.

Which is why the board and I recently held a retreat where we reviewed what the Alliance has accomplished in the last year and had conversations on how we can best support and promote the arts in Jackson.

We want to share with you the outcomes of that day as well as get your input on the course we plan to set for 2010.

Please join me on August 20 from 5:30 - 7:30 in the Common Room at ART634 to not only give your feedback regarding the Alliance's plan but to also hear about other community initiatives and to mix and mingle with your fellow artists and arts administrators.  Look for more information regarding this meeting in the coming weeks.

On July 30 we have an exciting event coming to Jackson, the Blue Lake Youth Symphony Orchestra will be performing at JCC Potter Center to benefit the Jackson School of the Arts.

What makes this unique is that the JSA is looking for responsible families to host one of these young musicians for a 24 hour period.  Sound interesting?  I thought so and that is why I have volunteered to be one of the host families.

There are still students needing host families - join me in welcoming these talented students to Jackson by being a host family.  Contact Chris Gorton by email at clgorton@gmail.com for more information and to be part of this exciting opportunity!
