Freedom, Slavery and the Roots of American Music

Ray Kamalay traces the development of early American music from its links to slavery up to the early jazz age. Discussion will include freedom, ancient and modern slavery, the Haitian Revolution, the origin of blackface, spirituals, blues, minstrel shows, ragtime and jazz. Ray is a long-time professional musician and contributes performances of the various genres.

Center Stage Jackson presents the family musical ANNIE at Grass Lake High School Auditorium for two weekends beginning Friday, November 6th at 7:00 pm. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students with ID. Reservations can be made by calling 517-522-5695.

Additional performances are Saturday, November 7th (7:00 pm); Sunday, November 8th (2:00 pm); and Friday, November 13th (7:00 pm) & Saturday, November 14th (2:00 pm & 7:00 pm).

Center Stage Jackson presents the family musical ANNIE at Grass Lake High School Auditorium for two weekends beginning Friday, November 6th at 7:00 pm. Second in the season's five-concert series. A variation of last season’s “Sum of the Parts,” this concert focuses on our amazing string section. For the first half of the program experience a journey from the distant to the recent past featuring the music of Handel, Mozart, Grieg and Barber. Winds will join the strings the second half for Mendelssohn's exuberant "Italian Symphony." Concert is held at Jackson Community College's Potter Center.
