Tom Timlin at Jackson Coffee Company

Former music teacher Tom Timlin is a native of Lansing, Michigan, now residing in Spring Arbor, Michigan near Jackson. He started singing with old 78 rpm records when he was only 4 years old and fell in love with music. He has been playing musical instruments since eight years old when he started on piano lessons. He later joined the junior high band program and learned to play the trumpet, about the same he took up guitar.
Tom enjoys singing the music of the 50s 60s and 70s, some older country and jazz. Many of these are album cuts, or rare hit songs not played much on the airwaves anymore. Many have different tempos and moods, many are long forgotten pop tunes. Sure, some sound innocent and corny by todays standards, but they capture fun of the era, and that is what people have lost a sense of history and fun. The only time you can hear this music is on satellite radio or a TV commercial in bit and pieces.
I once took a school group to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Tom says. The only rock icon they knew was Elvis. They had no idea who the Beatles were, or even Prince was. I was brought up on both big band and pop music, and later, classical. Its all universal: when was the last time you heard and sang along with Motown classic like Mr. Postman or Heat Wave, the McCoys Hang on Sloopy, Buddy Hollys Thatll Be the Day, the Everly Brothers Let It Be Me, Elvis Blue Suede Shoes, Bob Dylan (Like a Rolling Stone, It Aint Me Babe), Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell). The Lovin Spoonful, the Beach Boys and other surfin/car music, CCR, One Hit Wonders or almost anything from the Beatles song catalogue? American pop and folk music is our musical heritage, lets keep it alive and share it.
